The following is a copy of a web page I made back in 1997. I made it and posted it, and didn't make a single link to the page. Then I submitted it to several search engines to see if I would get any hits. Of course, I did. Information on (818) area code split to (818) and (626)

This page has information on the recent area code split of the (818) area code. Also, I'm listing all the affected prefixes in several different formats, which would be useful for writing a program to automatically update a database of phone numbers.

Text of GTE a notice sent out to phone customers in the affected area:

New telephone numbers are growing scarce in California's 818 Area Code. So on June 14, 1997, the telecommunications industry is adding a new area code - 626.

About half of the current 818 Area Code numbers - those located in the San Gabriel Valley, including most of Pasadena, are changing to the new 626 Area Code. Those located in the San Fernando Valley, including Burbank and most of Glendale, will remain in the 818 Area Code.

To help you change your dialing habits, there will be an eight-month transition period for existing prefixes (the first three digits of your phone number). From June 14 to February 20, 1998, either the old or the new way of placing calls to those numbers in the 818 or new 626 Area Code will work. But you're encouraged to begin using the new area code as soon as possible after June 14. Starting February 21, 1998, calls placed incorrectly will reach a recorded message telling you to redial. Some other things you should know...

The split won't affect the cost of calls between the area codes.
Only the area code will change. Customers moving to the new 626 Area Code will have the same 7-digit number.
The new 626 Area Code is one of the new types of area codes. It does not include a "0" or "1" as the middle number.
Business customers should double check with their PBX service representative to see if changes are necessary for their PBX equipment to process the new area code.
A special, toll-free test number has been set up to verify that PBXs can complete a call to this new type of code. The test number is (626) 777-0626

Other sophisticated services and equipment such as message-detail recording equipment, alternate route or least-cost routing systems, toll restriction, mobile telephone services, cellular telephone service, alarm circuits and PC modems.
800 service... if you have that service with another carrier, check to make sure your 800 number is transitioned to the 626.

Prefix Checklist

Existing prefixes changing to the 562 Area Code.

You are code number will change from 818 to the new 626 Area Code on June 14, if your 7-digit phone number begins with one of the prefixes below. Your 7-digit phone number stays the same. These prefixes will have the six-month transition period, during which dialing 310 or 562 as the area code will work. If your number prefix is NOT listed below, your area code number will NOT change.
