This page describes how to create a simple web page using Adobe Dreamweaver and how to publish that web page on a FirstClass server.

Both of these are available to all students at Biola University. The computer labs in the basements of Metzger and the library have Adobe's Dreamweaver program. And all Biola students can publish web pages on their BUBBS account, which is a FirstClass server.

Creating a Web Page

A web page is simply a collection of several specially-formatted files. Usually this includes an HTML file plus several image files. The Dreamweaver program creates the HTML file and helps you organize the other files.

Step 1: Create an empty folder on your computer, and name it. For simple web pages, it's easiest if you keep all the files you're going to use in a single folder.

Step 2: Open the Dreamweaver program. You can find it under the Start menu on Windows computers and in the Applications folder on Macs.

Step 3: Once Dreamweaver opens, create an empty HTML document by clicking on HTML under the "Create New" menu:

Step 4: Save the document. Before you add any images, links or text, save your document in that folder you created in Step 1.

Step 5: Create the page. Type content, add links, add images. Before you add an image, first copy the image file to your folder, then add it to Dreamweaver (click the image icon, or choose Insert... Image from the menu). Dreamweaver works similar to Microsoft Word, so if you're familiar with Word, you should be able to figure out how to make a simple page with Dreamweaver.

Step 6: Save your file (File... Save). You page should now exist in the folder your created. A web page consists of the HTML file plus the image files you used on that page. So one page may be several files.

Publishing the Web Page

To publish a web page for the rest of the world to see, you need to put your web page on to a web server. A web server is just a computer that is connected to the internet 24 hours a day and can store web pages and respond to requests for those pages.

The easiest way to publish a web page at Biola is to copy the web page (the HTML file plus all of the extra files that may go with it) in to the "Web Publishing" folder on BUBBS (which is Biola's First Class server).

Log in to BUBBS, and open the "Web Publishing" folder:

Copy the files from your folder on you computer into this Web Publishing folder on BUBBS. Once it finishes uploading, your page is available on the internet. The address depends on the name of your HTML file. For example, if you named your HTML file biola.html and if your BUBBS name is Matthew Weathers, then you address will be:

http://www.bubbs.biola.edu/~matthew.weathers/biola.html

Notes and Resources

At Home. Dreamweaver is free to use in the Biola computer labs. If you want to work on this at home, you will need a program that can edit HTML files. There are some free ones available. Or you can create the document in Microsoft Word and save as a web page.

Images. If you use your own images on your web page, you will probably need to be somewhat familiar with an image editing program. If you use an image straight from a digital camera, it will be too big. Use and editor to create a smaller version. Or you can use images from other sites. If you find an image you like, you can save it from that web page into your folder, then use it on your web page.

Accessing BUBBS. You will need to access BUBBS in order to publish your pages. There are instructions on Biola's web page here: offices.biola.edu/it/services/email/firstclass-tutorial/ and this page describes your account and login information, if you don't know your BUBBS password: offices.biola.edu/it/services/accounts/
