During the year 2003, my adjusted gross income was $19,159.38, and I paid 7.36% of that ($1410.97) to the federal government, and 0.835% of that ($160) to the state of California. About $55 too much was withheld for both state and federal, so I will get two $55 refunds shortly.
California now has a line item on Schedule 540 called the Use Tax. So I had to pay $10 sales tax for items I bought on the Internet out-of-state, for which I didn't get charged California Sales Tax. Even though you don't pay it when you buy, you have to report it and pay it at the end of the year. So the days of getting a discount by buying out-of-state are over.
Here are copies of my tax forms:
- Federal Form 1040 - Page 1
- Federal Form 1040 - Page 2
- Federal Schedule C-EZ
- Federal Schedule SE
- Federal Form 8863
- California 540 - Page 1
- California 540 - Page 2
- W-2 Form: USC
- W-2 Form: Biola
Also, I have my 2003 Annual Report, which shows where I spent money this year.
In the past, when I published my tax returns online, people have written asking if I'm afraid of identity theft. I'm not. The Social Security Number (SSN) on these tax forms is in an image format, so it's not searchable by search engines. As for the amounts: I have nothing to hide, so I don't mind publishing this. I end up using this web page myself a lot. More than likely, when I do my taxes next year, it will be easier to look on this web site than to look up my paper copies of this data. And I haven't had any trouble with my Social Security Number so far...
