Area Code 310 is in the Los Angeles area.

The following is a copy of a web page I made back in 1997. I made it and posted it, and didn't make a single link to the page. Then I submitted it to several search engines to see if I would get any hits. Of course, I did. These days, everyone knows that you should submit things to search engines, and that links aren't the only way, or even a good way for people to get to your page. See the similar 818 Area Code page

Information on (310) area code split to (310) and (562)

This page has information on the recent area code split of the (310) area code. Also, I'm listing all the affected prefixes in several different formats, which would be useful for writing a program to automatically update a database of phone numbers.

Text of a GTE notice sent out to phone customers in the affected area:

New telephone numbers are growing scarce in the greater Los Angeles area's 310 Area Code, so on January 25, 1997, the telecommunications industry is adding a new area code - 562.

About a third of the current 310 Area Code numbers - those located east of the Los Angeles River - are changing to the new 562 Area Code. Parts of Long Beach will stay in the 310 Area Code since those numbers are served by the same switching office that serves Wilmington, which stays in the 310.

To help you change your dialing habits, there will be a six-month transition period for existing prefixes. From January 25 to July 25, either the old or the new way of placing calls to these numbers in the 310 or new 562 Area Code will work. But you're encouraged to begin using the new area code as soon as possible after January 25. Starting July 26, calls placed incorrectly will reach a recorded messag telling you to redial.

Starting February 1, however, you'll have to use the correct area code for 53 new prefixes. Due to a number shortage, these new prefixes will be used in both the 310 and 562 area codes.

Some other things you should know...

Also, don't forget to reprogram...

Prefix Checklist

Existing prefixes changing to the 562 Area Code.

You are code number will change from 310 to the new 562 Area Code on January 25, if your 7-digit phone number begins with one of the prefixes below. Your 7-digit phone number stays the same. These prefixes will have the six-month transition period, during which dialing 310 or 562 as the area code will work. If your number prefix is NOT listed below, your area code number will NOT change.

Prefixes that require the correct are code starting February 1

Because there's a number shortage, 53 new prefixes will be used in both the 310 and 562 area codes. Unless you're calling someone in your own area code, you must use the correct area code and 7-digit number when dialing these prefixes, starting February 1. There will not be a transition interchangeable dialing period for these prefixes.

And here are those two lists in a perl format, if you want to cut and paste into a program you're writing. It's pretty simple to change this to other languages, too.

Why does this page exist? Where did it come from?

I was looking for this information somewhere on the web, but couldn't find it, so I put together this page. So the next person who comes along looking for the same info will find it. I'm pretty impressed with the amount of information available on the Web, but have never contributed, so this is my little contribution. I hope someone finds it useful.
